In the Shadows

The Roving Shadows

by Pascal Quignard

"We were constructed in the shadows. Passively in the shadows." - Pascal Quignard

The book is a profound reflection on the connections between reading, writing, sex, and death. Quignard connects these activities to primal human forces and animal instincts.
The work is extremely unique, alternating between aphorisms, historical anecdotes, personal memoirs, and fragments of myth from both East and West. The style appears to be almost "musical," reminiscent of Couperin's compositions (the book's title comes from his piece Les Ombres errantes). It was this musical aspect that I appreciated, as it was congruent with my own musical interests.
However, it can also be interpreted as a literary adaptation of postmodern French philosophy or critical theory. It demonstrates a "visionary" approach to literature while also being challenging and "enigmatic." It has almost "haunting brilliance" and the ability to captivate the reader.
