Two Poems
"In the bleak mid-winter
Frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron,
Water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow,
Snow on snow,
In the bleak mid-winter,
Long ago."
- Christina Rossetti
"I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December
A magical thing
And sweet to remember.
'We are nearer to Spring
Than we were in September,'
I heard a bird sing
In the dark of December."
- Oliver Herford, "I Heard a Bird Sing"
The first poem above is the verse to one of my favorite carols of the season. With the music of Gustave Holst it captures a sense of nature and the season.
The second poem provides words of endurance and encouragement that help us through the 'bleak' days of midwinter.
