Annual Top Ten Favorites
Since January 1, 2025, these books have been my favorite reads, and sometimes rereads. They span a wide range of reading genres, from nonfiction to fiction, from lengthy to short works, and from the classics to modern literary fiction. I would recommend them to one and all.
The list is in no particular order, but if I had to pick my favorite of the year, it would be Orlando by Virginia Woolf.
Under Western Eyes by Joseph Conrad
And There Was Light by Jon Meacham
Knife by Salman Rushdie
Too Loud a Solitude by Bohumil Hrabal
Orlando by Virginia Woolf
Praise of Folly by Erasmus
The Immense Journey by Loren Eiseley
Arturo's Island by Elsa Morante
2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke
Playground by Richard Powers

I regret to say the only one of these I recognize, let alone have read, is 2001...
Presumably you recognize several of the authors. Particularly enjoyable are the works by Eiseley and Rushdie.
Oh, yes. And I overlooked Meacham -- his Lincoln biography is on my TBR in my current track of reading. I want to look at Tyler, Polk, and Fillmore first, though.
I did read Knife and I so admire Rushdie's courage and strength all these years. The book is hard to read when it comes to what Rushdie went through but its a book filled with life and resilience.
I remember loving Under Western Eyes... I should really read it again!
I enjoyed it too, as I have all of Conrad's novels, but Victory is my favorite.
I had a similar experience reading it earlier this year. His experience was difficult to take, but, as you point out he demonstrated strength and resilience. It made want to consider reading some of his work that I have yet to get to.
